America’s Dysfunctional Political System

Doctrinally, in the aftermath of the Cold War, Republicans and Democrats were equally unmoored. Communism focused the conservative mind as few other existential threats had the potential to do. Democrats pivoted hard into social and cultural issues at the same time they began to push away from the concerns of working Americans, as evidenced in particular by President Clinton’s embrace of globalization and the inadequate safeguards his administration put in place for workers hurt by the economic dislocations that followed.
