When War is a National Choice

Americans would do well to remember now, before it is too late, that it is not preordained we will always do the right thing, or that we will always be the ones who heroically ride in to save the day. We are as capable of the same shortsighted and destructive overreactions to perceived threats, especially in times of extreme anxiety, as countries before us who similarly lost their way. What was special about American life, what made this country and its ideas the envy of the world, is not perpetually renewed. It too can be depleted and misdirected at the hands of political leaders who would rather distract Americans from problems entirely within our control to fix.
